so the good old Fort St George pub in Cambridge has been in the news lately since a certain famous couple dropped in for lunch….
but you know this was OUR pub a LONG time ago………here we are in May 1982, picture care of Denise again I believe.
We even got ‘our’ song from here because it was always playing on the jukebox whenever we walked in. Best story by a longshot though happened the weekend David and I met. You may remember the story about meeting at the rail station at Saturday lunchtime, well on Sunday lunchtime we headed to the Fort St George to drink by the river. At some point the previous afternoon David had slipped away to make a phone call to another English girl that he was SUPPOSED to be seeing that night. Made up some story about having to fly at short notice (you know, usual pilot stories) and moved on. So you want to guess who was at the bar in the Fort St George ordering drinks at Sunday lunchtime?? Oh no, not the girl he lied to – she was sitting outside on the grass with the rest of her family — her DAD was standing at the bar! Can we say CAUGHT???!! It was a lot of fun for the rest of us to watch David try to tap dance out of that one…….and you wondered why his squadron gave him the ‘American Werewolf in Cambridge’ award 😉
